Wendy Helen Bartlett was born in Seattle, WA, and moved north and west of La Conner with her family in the summer two weeks before her birthday. Since age 5, she has been fascinated with music, learning to play the piano by ear and taking flute lessons at age 10.
At 15, Bartlett participated in a one-week young composers’ workshop at Fort Worden State Park in Port Townsend, sponsored by the Centrum Foundation. Her first solo piano piece, “Raindrops,” was the result of that workshop. Bartlett composed a series of 8 short works for solo piano and several pieces for solo flute.
Wendy studied music theory and composition at Skagit Valley College before serving four years in the United States Navy as a supply clerk. Using her Montgomery G.I. Bill, she finished the Music program at Skagit Valley College, earning an Associate of Music-Transfer degree, and then on to Western Washington University, where she earned a Bachelor of Arts in Music degree, premiering her first symphony, “The Drowning Pool” c, and “Gather ‘Round the Beachfire”, for flute octet, c., in a collegiate recital in the Concert Hall of Western Washington University’s Performing Arts Center. Wendy was commissioned by the Western Washington University Trombone Ensemble to compose a work for the trombone quartet, resulting in the Chorale for Four Trombones.
Wendy’s mother, Kathleen Janet (nee Peck) Bartlett, passed away after a battle with Parkinson’s. Wendy composed “Many are the Seasons”, c, a series of seven sketches for chamber ensemble, musically depicting her mother’s life accompanying a series of photographs, from her mother’s childhood to her final years. This chamber suite premiered at Lairmont Manor.
Wendy is currently working on her second symphony, “Sea Symphony,” in memory of her father, Glen Harold Bartlett, who passed away quietly at home after a stroke and a long battle with Parkinson’s, joining Wendy’s mother in Heaven.
Wendy developed this site for Wendy Workx to promote past and present music works and provide a platform for launching commissioned works. Music samples can be heard on SoundCloud. The sale of music via the iTunes Store is pending. Wendy’s belief is that music is needed now more than ever and hopes to be able to play, study, share, compose, listen to, and learn from music for the remainder of her life. Wendy feels she isn’t through learning yet.
“Some of my very best teachers are fellow musicians."
